Fate
Another story, that is note quite compleate because, i have to do these for english project and I think you guys will like them. Thanks again to Samantha for editing it. :
“That’s not the right box.”
“Yes it is, it’s labeled comic books. See!?” I pointed to the black writing on the side of the box.
Brian stared at it, “On the other side it says food…”I looked into the box. There was a mixture of comic books and ho-ho’s. I pulled out one of the wrapped chocolate pastries and chucked it at Brian’s face.
“That’s what I think of your food.”Brian mumbled something under his breath, picking up the ho-ho and tearing the package open. He returned to sorting through his CD collection. Today had been dedicated to packing for university. Both Brian and I were accepted at The University of Toronto to study music . We both loved the same things, and had known each other since grade school. We always knew we would be roommates at some prestige post-secondary school.
I personally did not want to move out of our apartment. It was too much of a change. First going to school again, after one year of fooling around and working full time at the coffee shop, and also having to part with half of my belongings.
“Hey, do you think Ms. Bernicky will miss us?” Brian called with a snort from the living room. I laughed with him. Ms. Bernicky was our ‘loving’ neighbour. She had no children, never dated, and had nine cats. Well, she had ten last month, but Brian had an accident.
You see, Brian and I are what the media like to call “mutants.” I hate the word, though. It makes me sound like a complete freak. Contrary to popular belief, us mutants are not deformed at all… We just have special qualities. Brian, for example, can set things on fire with his mind.
There was a faint buzzing noise coming from somewhere in my bedroom. I looked around, hands at the ready to swat a fly. I saw my cell phone skidding across the bedside table and hopped over. I picked it up and flipped it open in one fluid motion. There was heavy breathing on the line, I furrowed by brow, confused. “Hello? Who is this?”
“Turn on the news.” A womans voice told me. I knew exactly who it was. Hannah.
“Wh-” I began to reply.
“Just do it okay!?”
“Fine, hold on.” I walked into the living room and rummaged around the couch to find the remote. Brian question my actions, but I didn’t reply. I flicked on channel four news. My mouth dropped in shock as the news anchor showed a video of meteors crashing into a building in New York city. The building collapsed, killing hundreds of people.
“Are you seeing this?! It’s on every news channel!” Hannah said loudly into her own phone.
“Yeah, yeah. I – wow – I can’t believe it.” Brian walked into the room. I heard him slowly sit on the leather couch to watch.
“I’m coming over.” Hannah announced. I could hear her arms being put into her coat sleeves. “I’ll be there in five minutes, tops.”I just nodded. My mouth was dry. Once I heard the dial tone I snapped my phone shut. I stood up and began pacing, rubbing my eyes with my hands. “This can’t be happening.” I repeated over and over.
Hannah arrived moments after I shut my phone. I jumped a mile into the air when I heard knocking on the balcony window. Brian ran over and opened the door for her. She was offered a bottle of water, which she declined. She forced a smile on her face. “I haven’t flown that fast since I was a kid.” Her hair was drenched. I could only assume that it was raining outside.
“What do you think of this?” I yelled, frustrated. “What are we going to do?” There was not much we needed to do, of course. We lived in Toronto.
Hannah watched the screen, sighing and taking deep, calming breathes. “We have to do something, of course.” She sounded like the apocalypse was coming.
Brian put his hands against his forehead, sitting on the edge of the coffee table. “This is so confusing. Why is this happening? Didn’t the government or NASA see this coming?! Shouldn’t we be warned? Didn’t the sky turn green when this happened to the dinosaurs!?”
“Calm down, Brian.” I said slowly, trying to clear my head and think.
“Damien,” Hannah said quickly, “On my way here I was thinking that we travel to New York and see exactly what is going on.” I stared at her, I couldn’t argue. I thought. “But how the hell are we going to get to New York to Toronto that quick? By the time we get tickets, and pack… It could take days!”
Brian sighed, “I doubt a plane could work in that condition. There’s smoke everywhere.”
“And none of us has a car!” I finished. I stared at Hannah, hoping she had some brilliant plan.
“And I can’t support all three of us that long, and with all of that smoke, even I would crash.” Hannah commented thoughtfully, but she was optimistic. “There’s no other way. We’ll walk. We can get some people along the way to help us. Some people like us. If we put all of our money together, I bet we can get some of the way there by taxi or bus. We can sell your comic books and I’ll sell whatever I have left. Maybe we can even hitch hike some of the way…”
I started laughing hysterically. I couldn’t believe that we were going to go through with this. That she was serious about going to New York. “So, what, you want to become a hero? To be the savior of all us mutants? We’ll start a religion to hail you after you prove to the norms that mutants aren’t, well, mutated.”
“That’s not what I’m trying to do here, Damien!” Hannah was flustered. Her face always turned red when she was angry. “If we don’t try to help, Earth might not have a change of survival, do you understand that!? If the norms die, we die too!”
“Why don’t we just let the Earth die! It’s not like the human race has been very kind to us! Why should I risk my life to help them?!”
Hannah sucked in a breath. “If you don’t want to come, you don’t have to.” Her voice shook. “You aren’t being forced.”I ran my hands through my hair and took a few deep breathes. I started pacing again. I swore loudly as I kicked a box across the floor. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Brian and Hannah flinch. There was a long pause, no one dared to move a muscle. I almost jumped when brian broke the silence.
“Maybe that’s why we have these abilities. To help the people we don’t care for.” I stared at Brian for a long time, before shaking my head and muttering. “Lord knows why we were given these powers.”
Hannah hesitated, but she tried to speak again. This time, she was calmer and wasn’t yelling. As she spoke, she walked towards me. “We have to do this.” When she reached me, she touched my arm. “And we don’t want to have to do it without you.”
They both looked at me expectantly. I sighed. “So, the fate of the world is in our hands, right?”
